The difference between L2VPN and EVPN

Hi everyone, I would like to know if EVPN and L2VPN is the same or not ?

No, EVPN (Ethernet Virtual Private Network) and L2VPN (Layer 2 Virtual Private Network) are not the same. While both EVPN and L2VPN provide Layer 2 connectivity over a network, they have different underlying technologies and features.

L2VPN is a generic term used to describe any VPN service that operates at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model. It allows organizations to extend their local area networks (LANs) over a wide area network (WAN) or the Internet.

EVPN, on the other hand, is a specific type of L2VPN technology that uses the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) as its control plane. EVPN offers enhanced capabilities compared to traditional L2VPNs by providing support for multi-tenancy, MAC address learning, and efficient MAC address distribution across the network.

In summary, while L2VPN is a broader term encompassing various Layer 2 VPN technologies, EVPN is a specific implementation of an L2VPN that offers additional features and benefits.
